As a visual artist I’ve worked in film, sculpture and pottery, but am primarily a mixed media painter, working in acrylic and oil. Growing up in Fort Lauderdale, I developed a “ love-hate” for Florida kitsch, often incorporating Florida postcards in my art. I find a dark irony in the banal images. Vacuous tourist imagery becomes a metaphorical part of my iconography. While the message may be serious, I enjoy using visual puns, satire or playful humor in my work. Sometimes I incorporate vintage, pop culture objects like toys and lenticulars from Cracker Jack boxes. This taps into both nostalgia and collective memory. While it may resonate with the viewer, it can also be used to comment on social issues in unexpected ways.
